Private Safari Selous Game Reserves. 4 Days Private Safari Selous: Selous game reserve derived its name from the popular British hunter and explorer Frederick Courtenay Selous. In 1896 Selous was designated as a game protected area in 1896 and later become the hunting reserve in 1905. Later in 1982 the UNESCO designated Selous game reserve to the World heritage Site due to its undisturbed nature and diverse wildlife.
Located at the distance of about 200 km south west of Dar es Salaam the commercial capital city of Dar es Salaam Selous game reserve stands as the potential safari destination in the southern Tanzania. With the area of about 55,000 square kilometers twice the size of Belgium Selous game reserve is the largest game protected area and wildest area in Africa.

Wildlife

Animals in Selous Game Reserve

This private safari Selous takes you to the reserve which boast over 1,000,000 large animals where half of population of the Tanzanian elephants live here. The reserve is also boast about 1,300 population of lions which is the largest more than in any other park in the world. Selous is also the best place to spot the rare African Wild dogs where about 4,000 individual were recorded. Other animals which found in Selous include about 60,000, 40,000 hippos and 108,000 buffaloes. Leopards and hyena can also frequently seen in the Selous game reserve. The reserve is also the best place for bird watching safari where about 430 species of birds have recorded.
The southern part of the reserve is mainly for hunting safari while the north of Rufiji River is comprises vast savannah plains which offers the best site for photographic safaris. The Rufiji River is the most important feature of the Selous game reserve supporting a vast population of crocodiles, hippos and a large number of riverine birds. On private safari in Selous you will also participate on boat safari along the Rufiji River which is among the best boat safari in the continent.
To some points the river forms several oxbow lakes along the northern bank which among them are Tagalala, Manze, Nzerakera, Siwando and Mzizima. Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Selous
Depart Dar es Salaam at 08:30 hrs for Selous National Park with picnic lunch boxes the journey of about 5 – 6 hours. Evening 1/2 hours boat riding Safari along the Rufiji River. Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River Camp

 

Day 2: Game Drives in Selous National Park
Morning game drives lunch at the camp and short rest. Late afternoon proceed with game drive. During the game drive you will see different game animals and birds such as African skimmer, Goliath Heron and saddle-billed Stork are often spotted. Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River Camp

 

Day 3: Selous Game Reserve
Morning 2-3 hrs walking safari in the bush accompanied by an armed ranger. Walking safari will give you a wonderful African wilderness experience. Sometimes you will find yourself walk next to Zebra, Giraffe, monkey, and many other animals. Also this can be the best opportunity to identify different species of plants and birds. Lunch at the camp then afternoon proceed with the game drive. Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River Camp

 

Day 4: Drive back to Dar es Salaam
Leisure breakfast in the lodge, pack the luggage and start the journey of 5 hours back to Dar es Salaam. At Dar es Salaam we will drop you at the airport for your onward flight back home or to the hotel.
