Amani Nature Reserve hiking; Amani nature reserve is located in the East Usambara Mountains and it is the home to fauna and flora which cannot found somewhere else. Among the endemic species found in this reserve and the Usambara Mountains include, the Usambara three-horned chameleon, Nduk eagle owl and the famous African violet (Saintpaulia).

One of the major attraction in Amani nature reserve is the Botanical gardens which is the second largest botanical garden in the world where major medical research are done in the Amani Medical Research. Now days this Nature reserve has changed into one of the significant tourist attraction in the country where by a number of tourist from around the visit for scientific research, ecotourism and hiking.

Amani Nature Reserve is a bird paradise where variety of birds can be spotted including, Uluguru viloet backed, forest warbler, Amani Sun bird, and various species of flowers such us nine species of the African Violet garden flower and the colorful butterflies.

Visitors can get information about the flora and fauna of the Usambara Mountains at the reserve visitors center before starting the tour. The centre has a variety of seed samples and photographs of varies species located in the area. You may also get an opportunity to get some information about the local culture and craft.

Day 1: Emau Hill, Usambara Mountains
Depart Dar es Salaam at 0800 hrs to Amani nature reserve in Usambara Mountains.. Stop for lunch at Korogwe Transit hotel then proceed to Emau Hill where you will overnight at Emau Hill Campsite.

 

Day 2: Amani Nature Reserve
After breakfast a short walk in the immediate area to experience a tropical rain forest and by the river to see the African Violets growing in profusion.

Today we will transfer you by road to Dar es Salaam via Msata and the historical town of Bagamayo.

Udzungwa Mountains Trek through Mwanihana trail takes 3 days with overnight stay in tents in the mid of the virgin and charming forest. Starting few kilometers from the Udzungwa Mountains National Park headquarters in Mang’ula village this trail develops through the eastern side of Mt. Mwanihana, across semi-humid hilly forests, humid sub-mountain forests, pluvial mountain forests, and short stretches of high-mountain moorlands, and reaches the highest peak at about 2,400 meters of height. While on trek you will encounter several species of animals and vegetation.

The total distance for this route is about 20 kilometers and trekking is easy with some short steep distances. Since the night is spent in the forest where the weather and climatic condition is somehow difficult then this trail is recommended for adventure travelers and wilderness lovers.

 

Detail Udzungwa Mountains Trek Program

 

Day 1 – 2: Dar es Slaam to Mikumi National Park

Pick up from the hotel at Dar es Salaam or Airport for the drive to Mikumi national park with a short stop in Morogoro town for breakfast. Continue to Mikumi national park and upon the arrival at the park conduct game drive with the possibility to see animal such as lion, leopard, cheetah, elephants, buffaloes and several species of antelopes. This park is also the best spot for bird watching safari with about 400 bird species recorded. Meals and overnight at Camp Bastian.

 

Day 3: Mikumi National Park to Mang’ula

Early morning leave Mikumi to Udzungwa Mountains National Park at Mang’ula for registrations thereafter transfer to the starting point of Sanje trail for a half day trek. While on the hike you will see several endemic primates such as Sanje Crested Mangabey and the Iringa red Colobus. Arrive at Sanje waterfalls which water drops at the height of about 180 meters. Spend some moments relax at the waterfalls and enjoy your picnic lunch overlooking the panoramic view of the Kilombero Valley. In the afternoon descend back to the Lodge for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 4: Mwanihana trail

Breakfast at the lodge then transfer to Sonjo Village which is begin point for the Mwanihana trek. Trek Mwanihana trail escorted by an armed ranger and encounter some game animals such as elephant and buffalo. As you track in the forest your guide will help you identify various medicinal plants. Today you will camp at Njia panda area.

 

Day 5: Udzungwa Mountains

Early breakfast, proceed with the trek through the changing forest to the Mwanihana summit. Encounter true montane vegetation amongst the Giant Ericas. Below you will view a spider’s web of elephant trails crisscrossing the park. Descend and trek through the forest until you reach your camp for the night.

 

Day 4: Udzungwa back to Dar es Salaam.

Early morning after breakfast descend the trek with possibility to encounter some primates and antelopes such as red duiker. As you arrive at the starting point catch up the vehicle back to the lodge then proceed to Dar es Salaam.

From Ngorongoro crater drive for 3 hours through the Ngorongoro Conservation area to Serengeti national park. While on the way you may encounter various animal species such as lions, elephants, zebras, and wildebeest among others. Serengeti national park boast the largest population of the wild animals include the migratory wildebeest and Zebra. Day 1: Arrive for Self Drive Safari Tanzania

Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport, met and greet by our representative who will show you the vehicle and handle it to you.

After taking the vehicle start your Self drive safari in Tanzania by driving to Ngorongoro highlands via Arusha town for lunch. Arrive Ngorongoro in the late afternoon for leisure stay which followed by dinner and overnight at Kitela Lodge.

Day 2: Self Drive Safari in Ngorongoro Crater.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the best place for self drive safari in Tanzania to see ‘The Big Five’.  The crater is also the home to the rare black rhino, good populations of lion, leopard, hyena, wildebeest, buffalo and zebra.  Other wildlife which can also found in the crater includes serval cat, cheetah, jackal, Grant’s and Thompson’s gazelle. Over 400 species of birds are also found in Ngorongoro Crater.

 

 

Day 3 – 6: Self drive in Serengeti

Early breakfast, then depart for a self drive safari to Serengeti National Park. Enjoy the game drive in the Serengeti plains searching for the Migration herds. During the migration you can easily spot predators such as lions, hyenas, cheetahs chasing and killing their prey. You will be spending the nights at Kubu kubu Tented Camp on full board.

Day 7: Serengeti – Maramboi

Today you shall depart Serengeti National park to Maramboi area which is located within the Lake Manyara ecosystem southern of Lake Manyara National Park. After the arrival spend the afternoon at leisure in the lodge, dinner and overnight at Maramboi Tented Lodge

The Maramboi tented lodge is situated at a prime location in the fields of golden vegetation within the ecosystem of Lake Manyara. Right from the lodge you can see a variety of animals such as zebras, giraffes, warthogs, gazelles among others. A walking safari can also organize from the lodge which is guided by a Maasai guide into the nearby areas which surround the lodge.

 

Day 8: Self drive Safari in Lake Manyara National Park

Breakfast at the lodge, depart for a self drive into Lake Manyara National Park. This park has the size of 330 square kilometers of which 220 sq kilometers is the Lake Manyara which the park derived its name from. The Lake Manyara national park boast a good population of elephants, wildebeest, hippos along with so many giraffes, and buffalo. Other animals of Lake Manyara include warthog, waterbuck, zebras, impala, and waterbuck.

 

 

Day 9: Self drive Safari in Tarangire National Park

Today you shall proceed with the self drive safari in Tarangire national park which is located to the south east of the Great Rift Valley. This park has the area of about 2,600 square kilometers which cross cut by the Tarangire River which stands as main source of the water for animals during the dry season. The park has also several wide swamps which dry into green plains during the dry season in the south. Late Afternoon drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

 

 Day 10: Maramboi – Arusha- Kilimanjaro Airport

Breakfast at the lodge, depart the lodge Kilimanjaro International Airport via the Arusha town. Our representative will meet you at the airport for the handing back the vehicle.

Afternoon you can opt to stay at leisure in the lodge swimming or embark into the chimpanzee trekking or a short walk in the forest. Evening enjoy the beautiful sun downer then dinner and overnight at the park cottage.

 

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking in Mahale mountains national park

Breakfast at 7:00 am followed by a morning chimpanzee trek in the tropical rain forest of Mahale. Other animals which you can see at during the trek include giant forest squirrel, bushy-tailed mongoose, Angolan black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-legged sun squirrel, brush-tailed porcupine, , banded mongoose, blue duiker and Sharpe’s grysbok. Other savannah animals can be seen. Return to the lodge at 12:30 pm for lunch then afternoon at leisure. Enjoy your evening sun-downer at the beach which later followed by a dinner and overnight in the lodge.

 

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking Mahale Mountains National Park

Breakfast at the lodge; depart for a chimpanzee trekking in the mountainous forest and return to the camp at 12:30 pm for lunch. After lunch spend the afternoon at leisure and enjoy evening sun-downers at the beach. Dinner and overnight at Tanapa cottage.

 

Day 4: Mahale Mountains – Kigoma

Today after early breakfast you shall depart from the cottage for the journey back to Kigoma. Arrive Kigoma in the afternoon at lunch time lunch.

Day 1: Flying Arusha to Mahale National Park

Early morning departs Arusha on a shared flight charter to Mahale mountains national park. Upon your arrival at Mahale Airstrip the Lodge /camp staff will transfer you by boat to the camp the journey of about 1.5 hrs. Enjoy hot lunch and in the afternoon go for the chimpanzee tracking in the forest accompanied by the guide. Dinner and overnight at the Kungwe Luxury Camp.

 

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking in Mahale National Park

Breakfast at the Lodge / camp; departs for the morning chimpanzee tracking in one of the fewest chimpanzee reserve in Tanzania the Mahale mountains national park. This park boast the world largest population of the chimpanzee. The topography of Mahale is hilly which dominated by the Mahale Mountains. The highest point is these mountains is Mount Nkungwe with the altitude of 2,462 m above sea level. Hot lunch in the Lodge / Camp followed by Leisure afternoon. Dinner Overnight at Kungwe Luxury Camp.

 

Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking

Spend the morning hours tracking the chimpanzee in the forest. Your guide will lead you through the right trail where you can spot the chimps. Depending on the season of the year chimpanzee tends come closer to the lodge / camp or further away which makes the trek to be shorter or longer which might take up to 8 hrs. In some occasion the chimps tends to be out of reach  that is why we encourage visitors to book a tour of at least two to three days. Afternoon return to the lodge / camp for lunch and spend the remaining hours of the days at leisure.  Dinner and overnight at Kungwe Luxury Camp.

 

Day 4: Mahale National Park – ARUSHA

Breakfast at the Lodge / camp, transfer by boat to Mahale airstrip for a shared charter flight back to Arusha.
