A Typical 4-Day Tanzania Shared Safari Itinerary

The 4-day safari starts from Arusha or Moshi and visits Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Serengeti National Park. Routes vary, and the order may change depending on the season, road conditions, accommodation availability, or the Great Migration's location.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After an early departure, the group travels to Tarangire for a game drive. The park is known for its large baobab trees, open grasslands, and elephant herds. Wildlife can include giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, impalas, and—if conditions are favorable—predators such as lions or leopards.
The Tarangire River is an important source of water, particularly during the dry season. Animals may gather near it, making the park especially rewarding from roughly June to October. Sightings are never guaranteed, however, and wildlife movements change with rainfall and local conditions.
After the game drive, your driver-guide will continue to a lodge, tented camp, or campsite outside or within the park area, depending on the package.

Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

The drive to the Serengeti is a major part of the day. The route may pass through the Ngorongoro highlands, with changing scenery from cultivated areas and forested slopes to expansive plains.
Once in the Serengeti, the group may begin a game drive en route to its accommodation. The Serengeti is famous for its wide grasslands and abundant wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants, giraffes, and several species of antelope.
The park is also associated with the Great Migration, when the herds of wildebeest and zebra move through different areas of the park in search of fresh grazing. The migration is a year-round movement rather than a single event at one place. Its location depends on rainfall, so ask the operator where the itinerary is expected to focus during your travel dates.

Day 3: Serengeti Game Drives and Ngorongoro Area

Enjoy breakfast in your camp and depart for a morning game drive in the Serengeti to explore different habitats that you couldn’t see on the last day. Sometimes Wilds of Africa offers an early-morning drive, when animals may be more active, followed by breakfast and another drive.
After a delicious lunch, the group departs Serengeti for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for an overnight stay. Along the way, you can pass by one of the Maasai bomas for a cultural experience. Arrive in Ngorongoro in the evening at your campsite located at the crater rim, pitch the tents, enjoy dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha

The fourth day of your shared safari ends with an early drive into the Ngorongoro Crater. This large volcanic crater features diverse habitats, including grassland, woodland, wetlands, and soda lakes. Because of its high wildlife concentration, the area is a top spot for spotting wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, hippos, hyenas, and lions. The rare black rhinos also live in the wider ecosystem of the crater, but sightings are not assured.
After taking time to explore the crater and eating a picnic lunch, the group will drive from the crater to Arusha. It can take several hours to reach Arusha, and people traveling by air in the evenings need to plan accordingly.
