Apart from starting this safari from Dar es Salaam it can also started from Zanzibar by flying to Dar es Salaam airport where you will depart by road to Selous game reserve and Mikumi national park. For visitors with limited time the tour can be customized to three days where they will only visit Selous game reserve by flying directly from Zanzibar to Selous and back after the tour. By doing this option the cost of the tour will slightly differ from the original cost of the 5 days Selous and Mikumi Safari.

In this safari you  will stay in mid-range camps or lodges however this can be customized to budget accommodation if requested.

5 Days Selous and Mikumi Safari Itinerary

 

Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Selous Game Reserve

Today is the first day of your 5 days Selous and Mikumi Safari where you be picked up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam at 08:00 am for the journey to Selous game reserve. If you will be arriving on the same day from Zanzibar our driver guide will meet you at the airport at the time of your arrival and continue with the journey to Selous game reserve. Arrive Selous in the mid-day for lunch and in the afternoon embark into the boat safari along the Might Rufiji River. The boat safari is among the major game viewing activity in this 5 days Selous and Mikumi Safari which offers you the rare chance to get closer to the riverine animals and water birds.  You can get closer to animals such crocodiles, hippos, waterbucks and varied bird species. However animals such buffaloes and elephants which feed along the river banks or those which come to drink can also spot at a very short distance un- compared to the normal game drive. In the evening get back to the camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Full day at Selous Game Reserve

In the two days of your 5 days Selous and Mikumi Safari you will conduct game drives in various parts of the vast Selous game reserve. The Selous Game Reserve is known to be the most remote wildlife area in Tanzania and in the entire continent of Africa. With the total area of about 54,000 km square bigger than Switzerland, Holland and Belgium independently this massive wilderness area is the home to the largest population of elephants on the planet.  In addition to that it is also the leading place with the highest population of the rare African hunting dogs.  Other animals of the Selous game reserve include lions, giraffes, leopards, impala, wildebeest, hartebeests, pythons and elands.  Selous Game Reserve has over 350 varied species of birds. In the evening you will return to the camp / Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Selous Game Reserve to Mikumi National Park

Today morning you will embark on walking safari which will give you more opportunity to explore the nature. This guided walking safari will take about 2 to 3 hours  before returning to the camp for breakfast. Your  guide will help you to spot different birds and identify different species of plants and trees. Along the walking trail you will also spot several animals but your armed ranger will take care of it.

After taking the breakfast you will, depart Selous to Mikumi with expectation to arrive in the evening. Dinner and overnight  at Camp Bastian

Day 4: Game Drives in Mikumi National Park

Breakfast in the camp, departs for a full day game drive. Mikumi national park offers an amazing game viewing experience which starts just few minutes from the park entrance gate.  Although mikumi is rich in varied species of animals and birds but it receives less visitors annually compared to its counterpart northern Tanzania game parks. While on game drive you can see animals such as lions, leopards, hyenas, wild dogs, elephants, zebras and varied species of antelopes.  Mikumi has recorded to have over 400 species of birds. The common birds of Mikumi include Marabou stork, Red-billed oxpeckers, Black-bellied bustard, Francolin, Cattle egret, Guinea-fowls, Hornbill and Malachite Kingfischer. There are also colorful birds such as Yellow-throated long claw, the Lilac-breasted roller and the Bateleur eagle. Continue with game drive till late afternoon when you will drive to Mikumi Wildlife Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Mikumi National Park to Dar es Salaam

Today after leisure breakfast in the camp you will pack your luggage and depart to Dar es Salaam. At Dar es Salaam we will drop you at the airport or your hotel.

Trekking Udzungwa Mountains through Mwanihana trail takes exactly 3 days although in the program is 4 days due to the additional day of transfer from Dar es Salaam to Udzungwa. The accommodation during trekking is in tents which perched in the mid of the virgin and charming forest. Starting few kilometers from the Udzungwa Mountains National Park headquarters in Mang’ula village the Mwanihana trail pass through the eastern side of Mt. Mwanihana, across semi-humid hilly forests, humid sub-mountain forests, pluvial mountain forests, and short stretches of high-mountain moorlands, and reaches the highest peak at about 2,400 meters of height. While hiking Udzungwa through this trail you will accompanied by an armed ranger because it pass through some areas with large game animals such as elephants and buffaloes. In addition to that you will also get the chance to see a various species of primates, birds and vegetation similarly to what you could see when trekking Udzungwa Mountains through other trails. 

The total distance for trekking Udungwa through this route is about 20 kilometers mostly gentle with some short steep distances. Since the night is spent in the forest where the weather and climatic condition is somehow difficult then this trail is recommended for adventure travelers and wilderness lovers.

Trekking Udzungwa Mountains Program

Day 1: Transfer to Udungwa Mountains 

The Safari to Udungwa Mountains can start at Dar es Salaam City if you resides the country through Dar es Salaam International Airport. From Dar es Salaam to Udzungwa Mountains you can either use buses which available everyday or the trains which operates in some days of the week. The train operates from Dar es Salaam to Makambako and Zambia passing via Mangula town which located at the base of the Udzungwa Mountains near the park. But if you are in Makambako you can just board a train which departs in the afternoon and arrives at Mangula in the morning of the following day.

If opt to use buses you will have to overnight at Mangula and start the Trekking on the following day because buses arrive in the afternoon. But if you use train you will not have to overnight instead you will start the trekking on the same day because it arrives at Mangula in the morning hours.

Day 2: Trekking Udzungwa – Mwanihana trail

Enjoy breakfast in the lodge and after that transfer to Sonjo Village which is the starting point of the Udzungwa Mountain trekking through Mwanihana trail. Since the Mwanihana trail pass through some areas with game animals so you will accompanied by an armed park ranger to ensure your safety and security. Some animals which you encounter along the trekking include elephant and buffalo. As you track in the forest your guide will help you identify various medicinal plants. Today you will camp at Njia panda area.

Day 3: Trekking Udzungwa Mountains

Early breakfast, proceed with the Udzungwa Mountains trek through the changing forest to the Mwanihana summit. Encounter true montane vegetation amongst the Giant Ericas. Below you will view a spider’s web of elephant trails crisscrossing the park. Descend and trek through the forest until you reach your camp for the night.

Day 4: Udzungwa Mountains Trekking

Early morning after breakfast descend the trek with possibility to encounter some primates and antelopes such as red duiker. As you arrive at the starting point catch up the vehicle back to the lodge or you can spend the remaining hours of the day exploring the beautiful Udzungwa Mountains by doing an additional trekking to the Sanje Waterfalls. Along this trail you will see a number of primates such as the endemic Sanje Crested Mangabey and the Iringa red Colobus among others. The Sanje waterfall drops water at the height of 180 meters which makes it the highest waterfall of all in Udzungwa Mountains. Spend some moments relax at the waterfalls and enjoy your picnic lunch overlooking the panoramic view of the Kilombero Valley. In the afternoon descend back to the Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Udzungwa to Dar es Salaam

Today after breakfast you will be transferred to the bus terminal for the bus to Dar es Salaam or to the railway station for the train to Dar es Salaam.

Mikumi National Park is the fifth largest national park in Tanzania with an area of about 3230 square kilometers. This park borders with Selous game reserves to the south and share the same ecosystem which allow animals to migrate between the two parks. The game viewing experience in Mikumi is amazing due to the presence of abundant wildlife and birds.

Ruaha National park on the other hand is the second largest park after Selous game reserve. Similar to mikumi, Ruaha Safari offers a superb game viewing experience due to the presence of diverse landscapes which offer habitats to significant number of mammals. While on game drive you can easily spot large prides of lions with about 20 individuals. Large herds of elephants and buffaloes can also seen moving up and down to the Ruaha River to drink. The best time to visit Ruaha national park is during the dry season where shrubs and tall grasses are dry to offer a clear sight during game drives. However during this time is also when animals tends to congregate along the basin of the Ruaha river.

While doing Mikumi and Ruaha Safari you are guarantee to see a variety of animals like elephants, lions, zebras, wildebeest, elands, gazelles, hyenas and many antelope species. Both two parks have sufficient number of bird species which makes them to the best place for bird watching.

 

Mikumi and Ruaha  Safari Itinerary

 

Day 1 -2 : Dar es Salaam – Mikumi National park
At 0800 depart Dar es Salaam with picnic lunch boxes for a drive to Mikumi National park. Mikumi National Park shares part of the Selous ecosystem which host a vast number of game animals. The Mkata Floodplain is possibly the best place in Tanzania to see the powerful eland, the world’s largest antelope. The greater kudu and sable antelope found in the miombo-covered foothills of the mountains that rise from the park’s borders. On your arrival at Mikumi Proceed with the game drive till evening. Dinner and overnight Camp Bastian

 

Day 3: Mikumi – Ruaha National Park
Today after breakfast we continue with the Mikumi and Ruaha safari to Ruaha National Park via Iringa town where you will stop for lunch. As you arrive at Ruaha register at the park headquarters and continue with the game drive till evening. Dinner and overnight at Ruaha Tanapa Rest House.

 

Day 4: Ruaha National Park Safari
Morning and afternoon game drive in Ruaha National Park with the possibility to see different types of plain animals include, lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopard, hippos, wild dogs among others. Lunch, Dinner and overnight at Ruaha rest house.

 

Day 5: Ruaha – Dar es Salaam.

Mikumi Walking Safari is the name given to our 3 days mikumi safari program which offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore the park in both foot and game drives which other packages do not.

Mikumi National Park is the nearest safari destination to Dodoma the Tanzania capital city and Dar es Salaam the country major commercial city. The Mikumi National Park shares its boundary to the south with Selous Game Reserve and Kilombero Game Controlled Area. Animals use to move within these three parks at different season of the year depending on the rains.  Animals such as Wild dogs, lions, Elephant, Buffaloes and Zebras migrate from the northern part of the Selous game reserve to Mikumi National Park. A part from the migratory animals there are also residents animals which used to spend their entire life in Mikumi national park.

The presence of high number of animals in this park guarantee visitors with a remarkable African wildlife safari experience where they can enjoy viewing animas on vehicles and walking safari which brings them much closer to nature.

Walking safari in Mikumi national park is done in dry season when grasses are short normally from August to October. There are two established walking trails  which pass through some game areas which offer visitors a high chance to see a variety of animals on the walk. While on the walking you shall be escorted by an armed ranger for the safety purpose. For long walking safari, move towards the north to Chamgore hills or for a short walking safari you can just climb the vuma hills.

Normally the walking safari is done in the morning or evening hours when the temperature is low. During this time animals are also active searching for their food taking advantage of the cool temperature. Enjoy the beautiful sounds of nature comprised of bird songs, animals’ voices and insects’ sounds.

This tour can be done all the year round but it is the best during the dry season when grass are short.

Mikumi Walking Safari Detail Program

 

 Day 1:  Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park

Today we shall pick you up from the airport, hotel or your resident house in Dar es Salaam for the journey to Mikumi national park. While on the way we shall pass through the beautiful landscapes of the coastal and Eastern Tanzania area. Enjoy the beautiful view of the Uluguru Mountains which extends from Morogoro to the western and southern towards the great Selous game reserve.  Few minutes stop at Morogoro for lunch then proceed to Mikumi. Upon the arrival in Mikumi continue with the game drive till late afternoon when we shall drive to Vuma Hills or Stanley Kopjes Lodge for Dinner and overnight.

Day 2:  Full day Mikumi Safari

Brekafast at the lodge, departs for a full morning game drive in the park. Your driver guide will take you into different parts of the park such as the mkata flood plains which host the largest population of animals. Spend time viewing the animals and get explanation about them from your guide. Evening drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Mikumi Walking Safari – Dar es Salaam

Early morning after breakfast depart for a walking safari into the park escorted by an armed ranger. Spend your time identify different animals, plants and birds. Your guide will by your side helping to spot different birds and animals as well as help to identify. In the late morning hours return back to the lodge for a short rest, lunch and depart to Dar es Salaam.

Adventure safari is a short holidays trip in Mikumi National Park and udzungwa mountains which enables you to experience a remarkable game viewing and thrilling trek. The tour begin by safari in Mikumi national park which is full of  abundant wildlife and stunning landscapes. Game viewing here is amazing as it begins a few minutes after crossing the park entrance gate. Mikumi is also offering an excellent bird watching experience with about 393 bird species.

After exploring the Mikumi we will heard to Udzungwa Mountains which situated in the southern west area about 48 kilometers via Kilombero Sugar estate. The Udzungwa Mountains offer an amazing climbing (trekking) experience through the established trekking trails. But for today we will climb this beautiful mountains through Sanje trails.  Along the trek you will enjoy the beautiful scenery and see several species of primates including the indigeneous Iringa red colobus monkey and Sanje Crested Mangabey monkey. The stunning Sanje waterfalls is another interesting feature you will encounter while climbing Udzungwa mountains. 

Udzungwa mountains are also home to over 400 bird species. The common bird species which can be spotted when climbing Udzungwa Mountains include the Rufous Winged Sunbird and the Southern Seedcracker. The Udzungwa mountains boast some species of diurnal.

Day 1: Mikumi National Park safari
Start your adventure safari at 0630 hrs by departing Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park. Stop for lunch in Morogoro then proceed to Mikumi and arrive for afternoon game drive.  Dinner and overnight at Tanapa Rest House

 

Day 2: Adventure Safari  – Mikumi
Breakfast then proceed with the Mikumi safari into various areas of the park include the Mkata flood plains and others where you will be able to see various African plain mammals such as Elephant, Lion, Wild dog, Zebras, Hyena, Buffalo, Wildebeest, Eland and Hartebeest. Over 300 species of birds have been observed in this park. Lunch dinner and overnight at Mikumi Wildlife Camp (Kikoboga)

 

Day 3: Udzungwa National Park
Early breakfast, continue with your adventure safari to Udzungwa National Park. After a short briefing we will depart to the forest to start the climb which will take about 3 to 5 hours up and down passing through the beautiful Sanje water falls. During the trek you will also be able to spot the endemic Red Colobus Monkey and the beautiful scenery with a lot of butterflies. In the late afternoon drive back to Mikumi for dinner and overnight at Camp Bastian.

 

Day 4: Mikumi to Dar es Salaam
