Itinerary for a Day Safari to Mikumi from Zanzibar

Zanzibar – Mikumi National Park – Zanzibar

Depending on flight availability, the departure time from the hotel is either 5 am or 4 am. The flight leaves at 0700 hrs and arrives in Mikumi Airstrip at 0810 hrs. Upon your arrival our guide will meet and greet you and provide a brief overview of your game drive in Mikumi. Riding in a 4×4 safari vehicle, you will explore the park and its wildlife from an open-sided vehicle. You may spot elephants, giraffes, lions, buffalo, zebras, and leopards during this privileged and comfortable journey through the African bush.

During mid-day, your guide will drive to restaurant located within the park for hot lunch while enjoy the panoramic view of the park at the backdrop. It is be the best weekend getaway options for individuals, friends or families who want to enjoy the nature and its beautiful environment after the entire working week.  If you intend to come for the Mikumi and Udzungwa Safari we advice you to fly to Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport (Dar) since it is the nearest International airport to the two parks.

The first portion of the 3 days Mikumi and Udzungwa safari is the game viewing in Mikumi national park which is located about 4 to 5 hours drive from Dar es Salaam. The Mikumi national park covers and area of about 3,230 square kilometers and it is the fourth largest park in Tanzania after Selous, Ruaha and Serengeti. Together with the Selous game reserves, Mikumi form one of the country largest ecosystems which support a tremendous number of wildlife species. Four of the BIG FIVE animals (elephant, lions, buffalo and leopard)  are found here. Large antelopes such as eland, greater kudu, deffassa waterbuck and sable antelope is among many other animals which will see during game drives. The park is also a home to over 400 hundred species of birds of which some you see during this safari.

The last part of your Mikumi and Udzungwa safari is the trekking of the untouched forest of Udzungwa Mountains which is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains.  The udzungwa mountains has several hiking trails which require some hours to several days of trekking but for this tour you will just trek for half day through Sanje trails which is most scenic route. This trail named after the Sanje waterfall which has the height of 180 meters. During trekking you will enjoy the beautiful forest and see different species of primates include the endemic Sanje Mangabey and the Iringa red colobus. Udzungwa mountains support over 450 species of birds. Picnic lunch will be served on the mountain where you will enjoy panoramic view of the Kilombero Valley. After trekking you will drive back to Mikumi for overnight awaiting for the next journey back to Dar es Salaam.

3 Days Mikumi and Udzungwa Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Mikumi National Park

Pick up from hotel in Dar es Salaam or at the airport and continue with the journey to Mikumi national park via Morogoro town. As you arrive in Mikumi you can stop for picnic lunch and continue with afternoon game drive. Mikumi National Park is among the most known park in Tanzania with area of about 3,230 square kilometers. While on game drives in this beautiful park you can spot a variety of animals such as elephants, giraffes buffaloes, zebras, elands, greater Kudu, wildebeest, roan and sable antelope. Mikumi is also known for having the amazing tree climbing lions which can also be seen in park like Lake Manyara and Serengeti. Other predators which can be seen in Mikumi are hyena, leopard, wild hunting dogs and black-backed jackal.  More than 300 species of birds have been recorded here including Eurasian migrants such as red billed ox pecker, marabou stork and lilac breasted roller.

Day 2: Climbing Udzungwa Mountains

After breakfast continue with your “Mikumi and Udzungwa Safari” by departing to Udzungwa Mountains national park the journey of about 90 kilometers through the Kilombero valley.

The Udzungwa Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc mountain chain, a centre of global importance for biodiversity and endemism. Covering the area of about about 1990 sq.kms and it is the first terrestrial National park in Tanzania with biologically diverse forest where approximately 20 – 30% out of 200 animals and plant species that grow here not found anywhere in the world. It is indeed one of the most important areas in Africa for primate diversity and conservation, with two endemic monkeys (Udzungwa red colobus Procolobus gordonorum and Sanje mangabey Cercocebus [galeritus] sanjei), and the near-endemic kipunji monkey Rungwecebus kipunji, a new genus and species discovered in 2004 and found in Udzungwa and Southern Highlands.

This park is the best for hiking with beautiful scenery and outstanding waterfalls. It is also among the top ten forests for bird conservation in Africa.  A part from primates there are other animals that can be found in Udzungwa are water buffalo, elephants, and full of reptiles and snakes and more.

Later in the afternoon drive back to Mikumi for dinner and overnight at Camp Bastian.

  • Wild dogs: Wild dogs are less common than lions and elephants, but you’re more likely to see them in Selous than in Mikumi

Selous Mikumi Safari

Apart from starting from Dar es Salaam the Selous and Mikumi safari can starts from Zanzibar by flying to Dar es Salaam airport where you will depart by road to Selous game reserve and Mikumi national park. For visitors with limited time the tour can be customized to three days where they will only visit Selous game reserve by flying directly from Zanzibar to Selous and back after the tour. Although this option is time saving but it is quitter expensive than the original option.

5 Days Selous and Mikumi Safari Itinerary

 

Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Selous Game Reserve

Today is the first day of your 5 days Selous and Mikumi Safari where you be picked up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam at 08:00 am for the journey to Selous game reserve. If you will be arriving on the same day from Zanzibar our driver guide will meet you at the airport at the time of your arrival and continue with the journey to Selous game reserve. Arrive Selous in the mid-day for lunch and in the afternoon embark into the boat safari along the Might Rufiji River. The boat safari is among the major game viewing activity in this 5 days Selous and Mikumi Safari which offers you the rare chance to get closer to the riverine animals and water birds.  You can get closer to animals such crocodiles, hippos, waterbucks and varied bird species. However animals such buffaloes and elephants which feed along the river banks or those which come to drink can also spot at a very short distance un- compared to the normal game drive. In the evening get back to the camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Full day at Selous Game Reserve

In the two days of your 5 days Selous and Mikumi Safari you will conduct game drives in various parts of the vast Selous game reserve. The Selous Game Reserve is known to be the most remote wildlife area in Tanzania and in the entire continent of Africa. With the total area of about 54,000 km square bigger than Switzerland, Holland and Belgium independently this massive wilderness area is the home to the largest population of elephants on the planet.  In addition to that it is also the leading place with the highest population of the rare African hunting dogs.  Other animals of the Selous game reserve include lions, giraffes, leopards, impala, wildebeest, hartebeests, pythons and elands.  Selous Game Reserve has over 350 varied species of birds. In the evening you will return to the camp / Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Selous Game Reserve to Mikumi National Park

Today morning you will embark on walking safari which will give you more opportunity to explore the nature. This guided walking safari will take about 2 to 3 hours  before returning to the camp for breakfast. Your  guide will help you to spot different birds and identify different species of plants and trees. Along the walking trail you will also spot several animals but your armed ranger will take care of it.

After taking the breakfast you will, depart Selous to Mikumi with expectation to arrive in the evening. Dinner and overnight  at Camp Bastian

Day 4: Game Drives in Mikumi National Park

Breakfast in the camp, departs for a full day game drive. Mikumi national park offers an amazing game viewing experience which starts just few minutes from the park entrance gate.  Although mikumi is rich in varied species of animals and birds but it receives less visitors annually compared to its counterpart northern Tanzania game parks. While on game drive you can see animals such as lions, leopards, hyenas, wild dogs, elephants, zebras and varied species of antelopes.  Mikumi has recorded to have over 400 species of birds. The common birds of Mikumi include Marabou stork, Red-billed oxpeckers, Black-bellied bustard, Francolin, Cattle egret, Guinea-fowls, Hornbill and Malachite Kingfischer. There are also colorful birds such as Yellow-throated long claw, the Lilac-breasted roller and the Bateleur eagle. Continue with game drive till late afternoon when you will drive to Mikumi Wildlife Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Mikumi National Park to Dar es Salaam

Today after leisure breakfast in the camp you will pack your luggage and depart to Dar es Salaam. At Dar es Salaam we will drop you at the airport or your hotel.

4 Days Trekking Udzungwa Mountains

Trekking Udzungwa Mountains through Mwanihana trail takes exactly 3 days although in the program is 4 days due to the additional day of transfer from Dar es Salaam to Udzungwa. The accommodation during trekking is in tents which perched in the mid of the virgin and charming forest. Starting few kilometers from the Udzungwa Mountains National Park headquarters in Mang’ula village the Mwanihana trail pass through the eastern side of Mt. Mwanihana, across semi-humid hilly forests, humid sub-mountain forests, pluvial mountain forests, and short stretches of high-mountain moorlands, and reaches the highest peak at about 2,400 meters of height. While hiking Udzungwa through this trail you will accompanied by an armed ranger because it pass through some areas with large game animals such as elephants and buffaloes. In addition to that you will also get the chance to see a various species of primates, birds and vegetation similarly to what you could see when trekking Udzungwa Mountains through other trails. 

The total distance for trekking Udungwa through this route is about 20 kilometers mostly gentle with some short steep distances. Since the night is spent in the forest where the weather and climatic condition is somehow difficult then this trail is recommended for adventure travelers and wilderness lovers.

Trekking Udzungwa Mountains Program

Day 1: Transfer to Udungwa Mountains 

The Safari to Udungwa Mountains can start at Dar es Salaam City if you resides the country through Dar es Salaam International Airport. From Dar es Salaam to Udzungwa Mountains you can either use buses which available everyday or the trains which operates in some days of the week. The train operates from Dar es Salaam to Makambako and Zambia passing via Mangula town which located at the base of the Udzungwa Mountains near the park. But if you are in Makambako you can just board a train which departs in the afternoon and arrives at Mangula in the morning of the following day.

If opt to use buses you will have to overnight at Mangula and start the Trekking on the following day because buses arrive in the afternoon. But if you use train you will not have to overnight instead you will start the trekking on the same day because it arrives at Mangula in the morning hours.

Day 2: Trekking Udzungwa – Mwanihana trail

Enjoy breakfast in the lodge and after that transfer to Sonjo Village which is the starting point of the Udzungwa Mountain trekking through Mwanihana trail. Since the Mwanihana trail pass through some areas with game animals so you will accompanied by an armed park ranger to ensure your safety and security. Some animals which you encounter along the trekking include elephant and buffalo. As you track in the forest your guide will help you identify various medicinal plants. Today you will camp at Njia panda area.

Day 3: Trekking Udzungwa Mountains

Early breakfast, proceed with the Udzungwa Mountains trek through the changing forest to the Mwanihana summit. Encounter true montane vegetation amongst the Giant Ericas. Below you will view a spider’s web of elephant trails crisscrossing the park. Descend and trek through the forest until you reach your camp for the night.

Day 4: Udzungwa Mountains Trekking

Early morning after breakfast descend the trek with possibility to encounter some primates and antelopes such as red duiker. As you arrive at the starting point catch up the vehicle back to the lodge or you can spend the remaining hours of the day exploring the beautiful Udzungwa Mountains by doing an additional trekking to the Sanje Waterfalls. Along this trail you will see a number of primates such as the endemic Sanje Crested Mangabey and the Iringa red Colobus among others. The Sanje waterfall drops water at the height of 180 meters which makes it the highest waterfall of all in Udzungwa Mountains. Spend some moments relax at the waterfalls and enjoy your picnic lunch overlooking the panoramic view of the Kilombero Valley. In the afternoon descend back to the Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Udzungwa to Dar es Salaam

Today after breakfast you will be transferred to the bus terminal for the bus to Dar es Salaam or to the railway station for the train to Dar es Salaam.
