Kondoa Irangi Rock Art

Kondoa Irangi Tour; The Kondoa Irangi rock art sites are located on the slopes of Irangi hills, near the small village of Kolo, located about 3 kilometer from Kondoa town along the Dodoma Arusha highway. The rock paintings were painted thousands of years ago by local tribes, using a mixture of animal fats, red tree sap and ash. The ones that have survived are all found on sheltered rock faces, where the overhanging rocks have provided shelter from rain over the centuries. Each site had scores of individual paintings, which usually covered an area of around 4m wide by 2m high.

The paintings varied in size from a few inches to a couple of feet. The Kondoa Irangi Tour brings you to dozens of caves and shelters with paintings of elongated people, animals, hunting scenes, and abstract markings. Most of paintings are recorded to be dated at more than 2,000 years old and they look similar to those which in Eastern and Southern Africa.

The Kondoa rock paintings are associated with pastoralist and agriculturalist communities. The paintings shows the cultural link among the communities that live in the Kondoa Area over time.

      • Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventure: A safari to Katavi is a true adventure. Reaching the park requires dedication and often involves charter flights, adding to the sense of exploration.

What to Expect on Your Katavi National Park Safari:

A typical Katavi safari will involve a combination of game drives, walking safaris (with an armed ranger), and potentially fly camping experiences. Given the remote location, accommodation options are typically limited to a few well-appointed tented camps, offering a comfortable yet authentic bush experience.

Here’s a glimpse of what you can anticipate:

    • Game Drives: Explore the park in open-top safari vehicles, accompanied by experienced guides who possess an intimate knowledge of the local flora and fauna. • Birdwatching: Katavi is a birdwatcher's paradise, so be sure to bring your binoculars. Look out for species like the African Fish Eagle, Saddle-billed Stork, and various hornbills.

Planning Your Katavi Safari:

Planning a safari to Katavi requires careful consideration due to its remote location and limited infrastructure. Here are some key aspects to keep in mind:

  • Best Time to Visit: The dry season (June to October) is generally considered the best time to visit Katavi. During this period, wildlife concentrates around the shrinking water sources, making for incredible sightings.
  • Getting There: The most common way to reach Katavi is by charter flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam. Alternatively, a combination of road and air travel is possible, but it's a long and arduous journey.
  • Accommodation: Accommodation options in Katavi are limited to a few exclusive tented camps. Book well in advance, especially if you plan to travel during the peak season.
  • Safari Operator: Choose a reputable safari operator with experience in organizing safaris to Katavi. They can handle all the logistics, including flights, accommodation, and guiding.
  • Packing Essentials: Pack light, comfortable clothing in neutral colors. Don't forget essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, sunglasses, binoculars, and a camera.

Day 1: Journey to the Untamed Wilderness

Morning: Departure from Iringa

Your Ruaha Safari adventure begins in the charming town of Iringa, nestled in the heart of Tanzania’s southern highlands. After enjoying a hearty breakfast at one of the local guesthouses or hotels, you set out on the road to Ruaha National Park, which is approximately a 2-hour drive away. The journey itself is a scenic delight, with the landscapes transitioning from the rolling hills of the highlands to the vast open savannas that Ruaha is famous for.

Afternoon: Arrival and First Game Drive

Upon arriving at the park in the early afternoon, you are immediately struck by the raw beauty of Ruaha. With over 20,000 square kilometers of diverse ecosystems, it’s Tanzania’s second largest national park and a vital refuge for an impressive array of wildlife. After checking into your chosen budget accommodation, you waste no time in embarking on your Ruaha safari first game drive.

The park’s semi-arid type vegetation, coupled with the Great Ruaha River, provides the perfect backdrop for wildlife viewing. You are likely to spot herds of elephants, as Ruaha is home to one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa. Giraffes, zebras, and impalas are also common sights. As the sun begins to dip lower in the sky, we’re on the lookout for predators like lions and cheetahs that start to become more active in the cooler temperatures.

Ruaha Safari Sundowners and Night Under the Stars

As the day winds down, you find a picturesque spot to enjoy a traditional ‘sundowner’ – a refreshing drink enjoyed while watching the sunset. It’s a perfect time to reflect on the day’s sightings and the serene beauty of the African bush. Dinner is usually served back at the lodge, where we can savor local cuisine under a canopy of stars. The sounds of the night, from the distant roar of lions to the chirping of crickets, lull us into a restful sleep, excited for what the next day will bring.

Day 2: Full Day Ruaha Safari Exploring Rich Biodiversity

Morning: Guided Walking Safari

An early start to the day rewards us with fresh, cool air and the opportunity to witness the savanna waking up. Today, we opt for a guided walking safari, a thrilling chance to experience the African bush on foot. Accompanied by an experienced guide and armed ranger, you will learn about the smaller wonders of the ecosystem – the plants, insects, and birds that are just as integral to the park’s biodiversity as the larger mammals.

The walking safari in Ruaha offers a chance to encounter wildlife in a more intimate setting. While maintaining a safe distance, you may come across antelopes, warthogs, and even elephants. The thrill of being at eye level with these majestic creatures is an unmatched experience.

Afternoon: Extended Game Drive

After lunch and perhaps a short rest at our accommodation, we set out again in a 4×4 vehicle for an extended game drive. The afternoon session provides an opportunity to venture further into the park, exploring different territories and habitats. Ruaha is known for its high concentration of predators, and with luck, we might witness the intense drama of a hunt or catch a glimpse of the elusive leopard lounging in a baobab tree.

Birdwatchers are also in for a treat, as Ruaha boasts over 570 bird species, making it a paradise for ornithologists. From the colorful lilac-breasted roller to the large ground hornbill, the variety is astounding.

Ruaha Safari Cultural Experience and Night Drive

In the evening, we can choose to engage with the local Barabaig and Maasai communities who live around the park. Learning about their traditional ways of life, customs, and coexistence with wildlife adds a rich cultural dimension to the Ruaha safari experience.

For the more adventurous, a night game drive is an option. This unique activity allows us to observe nocturnal animals that are rarely seen during the day. The eerie glow of eyes in the headlights and the sounds of the African night make for an exciting and unforgettable experience.

Day 3: Final Game Drive and Farewell to Ruaha

Last Ruaha Safari Game Drive and Breakfast in the Bush

The final day of our Ruaha safari begins with an early morning game drive, a last chance to catch the animals in their natural habitat. The morning hours are often the best for viewing as the animals are more active and the light is perfect for photography.

Midway through the drive, you may stop for a special treat – breakfast in the bush or drive back to the lodge for the full breakfast. After enjoying the declious breakfast is the time to leave the Ruaha park back to Iringa.  farewell to our time in Ruaha.

The drive allows us to reflect on the memories made and the sights witnessed over the past three days. The landscapes once again transform as we ascend into the highlands, marking the end of our 3 day Ruaha safari adventure.

Evening: Reflections and Departure

Back in Iringa, you have the afternoon and evening to relax and perhaps enjoy a final dinner and sharing stories from our safari. If you prefer to depart on the same day back to Dar there are buses which departs Iringa in the evening and arrive Dar es Salaam in the early morning where you can catch a boat to Zanzibar for your beach holiday.

4 Days Budget camping safari Itinerary.

Day 1: Departure to Tarangire National Park

Your 4-day budget camping safari begins at 07:30 am with a drive to Tarangire National Park for a full day game drive.

Tarangire National Park is often dubbed the “Elephant Paradise” because of its impressive herds that congregate around its permanent water sources. As the first stop on your 4-day budget safari, Tarangire offers an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s rich biodiversity. The park's landscape is characterized by vast savannahs dotted with ancient baobab trees and seasonal swamps that attract wildlife throughout the year. Your game drive here will likely reveal large herds of elephants, along with lions, giraffes, zebras, and various antelopes—all thriving in this ecological haven.

This park’s unique ecosystem makes it one of the best places to witness large mammals in their natural habitat. Its relatively small size compared to other parks makes it ideal for budget safaris since you can maximize wildlife viewing within a shorter time frame. Staying at affordable camping sites within or near the park ensures you are immersed in nature without excessive costs. The early morning and late afternoon game drives are perfect for spotting active predators and observing wildlife behaviors up close.

  • Spot herds of elephants gathering around waterholes.
  • Observe lions hunting or resting under acacia trees.
  • Capture stunning photographs of giraffes feeding on high branches.
  • Enjoy birdwatching—Tarangire is home to over 500 bird species including raptors and kingfishers.
  • Experience sunset views over the endless plains—a magical moment for any safari enthusiast.

As evening approaches, you’ll head to a public campsite in the park where you’ll be spending the night. Don’t expect luxury; this is budget camping, which means basic amenities. However, the thrill of sleeping under the stars with the sounds of nocturnal animals as your lullaby is an unparalleled experience.

A crew will set up tents, prepare meals, and ensure you have a safe and comfortable stay. Gather around the campfire for dinner and share stories with fellow travelers.

Day 2: Budget Camping Serengeti

Day two marks the start of your budget camping journey to the Serengeti, a name that comes from the Maasai language, meaning “endless plains.” The drive itself is part of the adventure, with landscapes changing and the anticipation of arriving at one of the most famous safari destinations in the world.

The Serengeti is undoubtedly Africa’s most famous national park—and for good reason. Known worldwide for its incredible annual migration of wildebeest and zebras, the Serengeti offers a quintessential safari experience filled with drama, spectacle, and raw wilderness. During your 4-day budget camping safari, you'll have ample opportunities for game drives across its sprawling plains to encounter predators like lions stalking prey or cheetahs sprinting after their targets. The open landscapes combined with acacia woodlands create dramatic backdrops perfect for photography.

This vast ecosystem supports an astonishing diversity of wildlife—over 2 million herbivores migrate across its plains—making it one of the richest wildlife destinations in Africa. Budget camping options inside or just outside the park allow travelers to stay close to nature without high costs associated with luxury lodges. The best times to visit are during the dry season (June to October), when animals gather around water sources making sightings easier. Guided game drives led by experienced rangers increase your chances of spotting elusive predators and rare species.

  • See prides of lions lounging under acacia trees.
  • Spot cheetahs resting after hunting expeditions.

Marvel at the variety of bird species in Serengeti, including eagles, ducks, and herons. After hours of exploration and wildlife encounters, return to the camp for a hot lunch. Continue your budget camping safari to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where dinner awaits at the campsite.

Day 4: Crater Tour – Back to Arusha

The  Ngorongoro Crater—a massive volcanic caldera that serves as a natural conservation area teeming with life. As your final destination on this 4-day budget safari, Ngorongoro offers a concentrated dose of biodiversity within a breathtaking setting. The crater floor hosts over 25,000 large mammals—including elephants, buffaloes, hippos in lakes, flamingos along shores—and predators such as lions and hyenas patrol their territories freely.

Driving down into the crater provides an unparalleled opportunity to see diverse species congregated in one place—a true microcosm of African wildlife. Budget camping near the crater rim allows visitors to enjoy spectacular sunrise views before descending into this natural amphitheater for game drives. The high density of animals means you’re almost guaranteed sightings; however, early mornings provide optimal viewing conditions before midday heat disperses animals seeking shade.

  • Visit Lake Magadi full of flamingos during certain seasons.
  • Spot black rhinos—one of Africa’s most endangered species.
  • Watch lion prides resting under rocks or stalking prey.
  • Photograph stunning landscapes framing abundant wildlife.
